He joined officers at the heart of Norwich s nightlife on Saturday, and spoke to business owners and volunteers and workers from other agencies, lasting until 4am on Sunday morning. Prince of Wales Road hit the headlines in August after 10 people were arrested following an early-hours fight on August 4, and Norwich City Council has proposed an Early Morning Restriction Order which would ban the sale of alcohol between 3am and 6am on weekdays and 3.45am and 6am on Saturdays and Sundays in the area. Mr Wright said: I was very keen to get an update on operations along Prince of Wales Road, particularly given some of the disturbances over the summer.
Saturday however passed with thankfully few incidents perhaps helped by the poor weather. With thousands of revellers in the area, we need all the agencies and businesses to work effectively together to keep vulnerable people safe and to tackle problem behaviour. He praised the cooperation between agencies and the public, adding: I was also pleased to see the fantastic contribution made by volunteers, including the SOS Bus, St John Ambulance and the Street Pastors.
They do brilliant work in helping those who are at risk of harm. There are many problems and consequences for both individuals and the local community as a result of the ease of supply of alcohol. I do support the proposal to further restrict the hours of alcohol sales along Prince of Wales Road, and I hope that the Council s plan for an Early Morning Restriction Order (EMRO) is delivered.
The MP was joined by James Wright, Liberal Democrat group leader on Norwich City Council.
